The themes of this week’s portion, Vayishlach, and the coming Chanukah celebration, align insightfully. Jacob and Esau are bound to meet again, years after their youthful contention. We learn of Jacob’s fears and uncertainties about the reunion, as he wrestles with an angel or himself in anticipation of the event. Jacob emerges transformed, a change that is evident to Esau the next day, as they fall upon one another in forgiving embrace.
As the brothers recommit themselves to a renewed bond, we too celebrate our people’s historic Chanukah—a rededication to faith and the future—as did our valiant ancestors in the days of the Maccabees. And our prayers extend to the wellbeing of the United States of America—the great nation that was our people’s refuge and salvation—a nation that is striving through its own process of recommitment and renewal. May all of the lessons and wisdom of the season and the moment light the way for you, for your families, and for our world.
