Where do you go to find something that is everywhere? If it is everywhere, shouldn’t you be able to access it anywhere?
Jewish tradition teaches that God is everywhere. It also teaches that God is in everything or even is everything. Yet, our lived experience may be that we are more able to find God in some places than others.
The ancient Israelites, as we read in this week’s parasha, encounter a physical manifestation of this notion. During the day God’s presence is known by the appearance of a cloud and at night the appearance of a fire. God’s presence fits the setting in which the Israelites might view it.
For some people, the sense of awe of familiarity from a sanctuary space elicits that connection to God. For others, the beauty and grandeur of nature remind us of God’s presence.
