Where Can We Find God?
Finding God is not an easy task for many of us. While Judaism affirms there is only one God, there is no one answer about where God is located. Is God everywhere? In everything? Close? Far away? Silent? Communicative?
This week we read of the Israelites building a mobile dwelling place for God as they wander in the desert. God instructs the Israelites to build this holy space so that “I may dwell among them.” We could understand that to mean that God will now be dwelling in this space. Or it could mean that now that the people have created a space for God, God is among them. Creating a physical space to access God helped the Israelites create a space in their hearts and minds to access God.
Even if God is everywhere, not all spaces put us in the right mental space to access God. I find God when I am surrounded by a community in prayer in our sanctuaries. I also find God while praying outside, watching the sunshine on the mountains at Camp Kalsman. And I find God when I am on the top of a mountain, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
