The blessings of the Timeout are well known for misbehaving children and elite athletes. Tike-terrors have a moment to regroup and reconsider, and sports stars can catch a breath and strategize the next play. The same dynamic arises in this day between the High Holidays—Shabbat Shuvah—The Sabbath of Return. Between the celebratory sense of renewal of Rosh Hashanah and the contemplative process toward atonement of Yom Kippur, we have the opportunity to take a spiritual breath—to expand our perspective, to deepen our reflection, and to more fully commit to the change and growth that can only come from a deliberate and sacred process.
