Standing on the precipice, the entire community gathers. Our weekly Torah portion, Nitzavim, mirrors much of our High Holy Day experience. Nitzavim opens listing out every member of the community who is present- the heads of tribes, the elders, the leaders, men, children, and wives- all of the Israelites! The text even tells us the resident aliens were present, as were the non-Israelite laborers. The entire community gathered to hear Moses’ words as they looked over the land of Israel.
Starting this Sunday, we too gather with our entire community, on the precipice of entering into the new year, 5780. Like the Israelites, may this be a year of seeing each and every person, no matter their stature in the community. May this be a year of including each person in our community. May it be a year of increased togetherness.
Shanah tovah!
