When have you felt like a part of something bigger than yourself? What did you feel in that moment? This week we read a special Torah portion for the seventh day of Pesach containing the Song of the Sea, the song the Israelites sang as they escaped from enslavement in Egypt. In their joyous celebrations of freedom and through the intricacies of Hebrew grammar, the people become one. The Torah tells us that Moses and the Israelites sang this song, and “sang” is conjugated in the singular, even though there are multiple subjects singing. We can understand that to demonstrate that in this moment of liberation, the community united and sang as one.
