Traveling through the Wilderness
We are living through what feels like an unprecedented time. Had there only been a global pandemic lasting for months where we needed to stay at home, dayenu. We are also experiencing a moment of reckoning and consciousness raising around racism in our country and the murder of Black people and people of color.
The journey of the Israelites forms our foundational paradigm for moments like this. Like them, we are journeying in the unknown. And like them, we will emerge changed when we reach the Promised Land. And like them, the journey to the Promised will take work. Our Torah portion this week offers us the imagery of God traveling with the Israelites, taking the form of a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.
