As we begin again the sacred story of our people, our Creation narrative challenges modern sensibilities. As a people who have always striven to balance reason with faith, we often blanch at how Ma’aseh Bereishit, the Acts of Creation, have been twisted into a denial of science and an affirmation of a one-dimensional, static belief. In a time in which truth and facts have become increasingly relativized, let us recall a critical lesson of the Genesis story: There are many kinds of truth: Scientific, historical, moral and artistic. And while the Six Days of Creation do not recount the empirical origins of our world, their description still possesses a power and a purpose, instilling insight into the Source of our moral and spiritual foundations—roots that secure a faith that far transcends the fossil record.
