Kindling Lights

It is no coincidence that Chanukah lands in the darkest part of the year. Especially here in the northwest, we need that extra light to brighten up our dark days. But what are we to do when we need light the rest of the days of the year?

We read in Tetzaveh the instruction for the Israelites to bring oil to fuel a constantly burning flame, a ner tamid. The flame was to be placed on the mishkan and the rule was to be followed for all generations. In contemporary times, we place a ner tamid, usually in the form of a lightbulb, in our sanctuaries to adhere to this law.

Through this ever-burning light, we acknowledge that we need more light at all times. Even as the days get brighter now in March, there remains much darkness.

What can you do to kindle your own light this week? What are the ways that you can be a light to others?
