How do we greet the unknown?
For many of us, our world is filled with the unknown. We do not know what our planet will look like in 50 years. We do not know who we will encounter in the near future that might change our lives. We do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What we can control in the face of all of this unknown is our response.
In Parshat Vayeira, Abraham, too, encounters the unknown. As he sits outside his tent during the heat of the day, three strangers approach. Without asking their names, he offers them water, food, and a foot washing. He greets the unknown with compassion and a welcoming spirit.
Things may not be so cut and dry for us today. But what would it look like to be more like Abraham this week, offering compassion and welcome to those we encounter?
