As we begin the Book of Exodus with Parashat Shemot, we encounter the iconic story that has come to define our civilization’s appreciation for freedom and justice. But despite the universality of these themes, Moses’ encounters with God in assigning the task ahead are steeped in mystery. The burning bush, unconsumed and thus a truly supernatural experience, marks the unique nature of Moses’ experience, and thus his unique relationship with God. And God’s revelation of the enigmatic name “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh/I will be what I will be” is an equally distinguishing sign of Moses’ unique role and relationship with God. The nature of prophecy is opaque and mysterious, but when translated into human agency, it is the engine that drives our ultimate transformation.
