Is Moses really Moses’ name? In the second chapter of the Book of Exodus, Pharaoh’s daughter finds a baby in a basket floating in the Nile, naming him Moses as she “drew him from the water.”
The Torah tells us that Moses’ mother hid him until she could not hide him any longer before placing him in the basket. Surely she named him when he was born? Surely Moses had a Hebrew name?
The Torah states that when Moses was born, his mother saw how Good he was—ki tov hu—which also can be translated as “he is Good.” In Talmudic tractate Sotah, Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Judah read this verse and expound that “His name was Tov (Good); Rabbi Judah said: His name was Tuvyah (Good God).”
