Two Minutes of Torah | Sh’mini | Leviticus 9:1-11:47

From the moment we awaken in the morning, our days are filled with decisions. We choose which pair of pants to place our legs in and what type of audio (whether music, podcast, or audio book) accompanies us on our commute. We decide whether we will eat cereal, yogurt, eggs, or leftovers for breakfast. We pack a lunch or buy one. We drink coffee or tea or water or all of them. Many of the decisions we make every day center around food.

Although written in a wholly different time, the Torah understands our daily decision making, especially when it comes to food. Sh’mini outlines the animals that are kosher (fit) to eat, and those that are not. The genius of the laws of Kashrut lies in their daily application. We eat every day, multiple times a day. Therefore, each day provides ample opportunities for Jewish, holy choices.

Whether or not you keep Kosher, you can still make holy choices every day. You can choose to be kind and compassionate with your words. You can decide to be present and use your phone judiciously. You can make the holy choice with your actions and purchases to help our planet and those who inhabit it.
