How perfect, how brilliant, that every year, as we approach Rosh Hashanah, we are given the words of Parashat Nitzavim: “Atem nitzavim hayom kulchem”—you stand this day, all of you. We stand together, the Torah tells us—from the leaders to the wood-choppers, from the elders to the water-carriers. No one is outside the covenant.
What better bookend for Rosh Hashanah? As the gates of the New Year swing open, we are reminded that this journey is not undertaken alone. We do not enter the sweetness of the year in isolation; we cross the threshold as a people. As a community. As a kehillah kedoshah—a sacred community, bound together in covenant.
And soon, as Yom Kippur draws near, these same words remind us that confession itself is communal. We say Ashamnu and Bagadnu not in the singular, but in the plural. Not “I,” but “we.” For our failings, like our hopes, are shared.
May we all be sealed in the Book of Life—together, as one sacred community.
