Standing on the Edge
As the Jewish year comes to an end, our Torah portion Nitzavim describes a fitting parallel experience for the Israelites. After their 40-year journey through the wilderness, the Israelites find themselves on the precipice of entering the land. The Torah describes them as “standing” as the whole community of people enter into a relationship with God.
We, too, find ourselves at the end of this year’s journey. We, too, stand on the precipice of entering the new year. Very soon, we, too, will gather as a community and reflect on our relationship with ourselves and with God.
Our journeys will (God willing) continue in the new year. May we take this milestone as an invitation to strive to be our truest, best selves in the year to come.
