Words matter. In our tradition, it is through speech that worlds are created, through speech that blessings and curses are upheld, and it is through speech that our tradition is transmitted from generation to generation.
This week, we begin the ending of the Torah by learning that “these are the words that Moses spoke to all of Israel” as they readied themselves to cross into the Promised Land after 40 years of waiting and wandering.
Moses’ book-long speech reads like a commencement speech in which the teacher reminds the Israelites of how far they have come, what they have learned on their journey, and the struggles they can expect as they enter into this new chapter.
Moses’ words are strong and encouraging, and admonish Israel of the dangers and uncertainty that are soon to come. It is abundantly clear that these words are not only for the generation set to enter the land but for us in this day, too.
Each beginning is another beginning’s end. Each day is a new opportunity to take on the challenges of life and march on to a promise of growth and life-renewed. As the warmth of summer begins to show signs of the crisp change of fall, I look forward to embracing the new beginnings both expected and unexpected together.
