The Eternal Cycle
Our tradition often reflects the most foundational of human experiences, offering unique insight through the lens of Jewish values. While the juxtaposition of sadness and loss with joy and celebration can be jarring, life often provides these seemingly opposing events as an opportunity to glean a deeper wisdom.
In this week’s portion, Chaye Sarah, Abraham must shift from mourning his wife Sarah’s death and preparing for her burial to finding a wife for his son Isaac. The proximity of these descriptions in the Torah reminds us that though it is challenging emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually to move from grief to gratitude in a short time frame, these pairings are an inevitable part of the tapestry of life.
For our losses render our blessings more precious and meaningful, and our celebrations give us the perspective needed to transcend even the heaviest heart. While our future is uncertain, the surety of such braces of milestones brings a certain and affirming balance to our existence.
